I managed a brief trip into the high plains that found a solo rainbow trout willing to take my grasshopper pattern as the daylight faded.  However, the dancing leaps of the trout were not the pinnacle of my evening.  I was lucky enough to witness a spectacular valley sunset. George and I headed out early to get a nice start on the 4th of July holiday. A day on the water sounded perfect and with higher temperatures forecasted for the valley we went up in the hills and cooled off at some waters right at the 9000 foot elevation line. I got a little time in on the water before the incoming storm took over the valley. I had the fly rod in the vehicle and had a little time between errands and responsibilities so I checked on a nearby lake to see how the ice was faring and possibly throw a line for a short break. The weather was too nice to stay indoors today. Temperatures in the 40's negated the cooling effect of the stronger gusts of wind. Beau and I decided that maybe the fish would be active right at dusk tonight under the ice and that we might be able to take advantage of the good weather and luck upon some husky rainbows. I managed an hour out on the banks of what has opened back up here in the local area. The fish were active and hungry and I managed to find four brown trout willing to take the leech. The best fish of the night boiled on the leech right as it hit the water. There was a big swirl and immediate tension on the line as I was unable to even get a single strip in before the fish engulfed the fly.

I went out and prospected for trout in the muddy flows that were set loose due to the 40 degree heat wave we are currently having here. It was slow going with the level of mud in the system and water up high, but I worked a hole where I could just feel a fish should be laying and then lightning erupted on the end of the line. George and I talked Saturday evening and decided to try an early Sunday morning trip to beat the winter storm that was headed into the valley. We had a wicked cold snap the last two days and now the sun is finally out to warm us back up. I got out for a walk and decided to strip the leech to see who was active in some old haunts. Less than an hour to cast, but I got lucky and pulled a two species afternoon. The wind was brutal but enough at my back not to cast into the grass and blow out every hole. The rainbow was quite a surprise, this is typically predominant brown trout water. The wind was capping the lake today and although Eric, Floyd, and I headed out to take some shots on fish, it was tough fishing. We did manage some fish though and the ones we landed were stout rainbow trout that made you work down to the last second of netting them. Eric and I made it out for a few hours to tempt rainbows with hopper patterns out on the plains. The fish are looking up for them with some consistency and these are the biggest trout either of us have ever had regularly rising to a dry. Floyd and I headed into the mountains with thoughts of trying a lake known to have golden trout residing in its clear, cold waters. I got up in the pre-dawn morning to catch the peak of the Perseid shower and had a nice time viewing this year. Skies were filled with patches of clouds when I went to sleep on the couch. My watch alarm went off at 3am and I got up to perfectly clear, dark skies. Eric and I planned a trip on the plains to do a little stillwater pontooning and search for some nice rainbow trout. The wind was howling today when I went out for a brief evening trip after work. It had created a nice foam line running directly down the dam of the lake. Fish were stacked on the foam and I was able to catch a few in close by just working my nymph rig in the roil of the foam. The trout wanted the midge and all were on the bottom fly. The ice is partially off some of the higher lakes now and that means the full on season of chasing big lake resident trout is almost here. A brutally cold wind rode into the valley this evening. The fish were really keyed in this evening on midges along the dam. I was happily engaged in hooking, fighting and landing rainbows at a predictable and fast pace. I managed an hour to visit a close stillwater in the evening after work. The lake was very muddy with a visible mud line far out of casting distance.
