A couple quick shots from Thanksgiving Eve. Eric and I decided to meet up and try for some trout in the afternoon and evening before the holiday consumed us on Thursday. We got a couple decent fish on the buggers.  He has been a big brown magnet this year.

There is no way around it... the high country snow that is.  I just had to climb over it and stagger/slide my way around the lake to open water areas.  There were many large ice flow chunks that had been piled up on the west side of the lake from the wind. They were on the midge patterns heavily and with the clouds of midges in the air this wasn't much of a surprise.  I managed four to hand with quite a few phantom takes and LDRs.  Definitely a relaxing way to spend the evening.The typical 12 to 14 inchers that were crushing the midges. So with a couple hours after work I headed out to the plains lakes again and gave it another shot to see what might be happening this evening.  It was a funky sort of weather pattern with gray, rainy clouds in parts of the valley, and open sunny patches in other areas. I hit a lake that is right about at 8000 feet and it was just starting to reveal its treasured open water.  The edges were all open with ice shelf conditions on some sides.  I watched an immature bald eagle fishing the edges of the open water.  The eagle was onto something. Wind and temperature forecasts look poised to peel the hard stuff away this week and usher in the open water season.  George graciously let me tag along for an early morning trip. I tried to wait them out to see if later in the day they might lay down a bit but that never happened.  It made casting the fly rod an act of timing and target practice. The fish were active and hungry and I managed to find four brown trout willing to take the leech.  The best fish of the night boiled on the leech right as it hit the water. The sun was shining and no wind to speak of made for quite a day of swinging flies.  The morning started below freezing which kept the muddy runoff at bay until about mid-day. It was slow going with the level of mud in the system and water up high, but I worked a hole where I could just feel a fish should be laying and then lightning erupted on the end of the line. We were on the ice before sunrise and the fish were active.  We saw many fish come through the holes from the ice hut. Today I finally found a few hours in the afternoon to pursue trout on the hard water.  The going was slow and first and I couldn't seem to find any fish or even see any down the hole. The ice condition reports were sounding safe at last and I managed to find a good location to set up and start jigging.  Actively working marabou jigs seemed to be what the fish were interested in today. The temperature was hitting all of 17 degrees when I decided to take a stroll along the water and see if any trout were out on thanksgiving.  I managed to find one little brown trout in the short time I could stand battling the wind and cold. Less than an hour to cast, but I got lucky and pulled a two species afternoon. The wind was brutal but enough at my back not to cast into the grass and blow out every hole. The rainbow was quite a surprise, this is typically predominant brown trout water. We did manage some fish though and the ones we landed were stout rainbow trout that made you work down to the last second of netting them.  Nymphing with PTs and midges was the key to the few fish we were able to take. They met up with Eric and I at the lake and we proceeded to have a great day for rainbows.  I couldn't get the hoppers working on Sunday but the nymphing rig was producing and there seemed no reason to deviate from the hot subsurface action. The fish are looking up for them with some consistency and these are the biggest trout either of us have ever had regularly rising to a dry. Skies were filled with patches of clouds when I went to sleep on the couch.  My watch alarm went off at 3am and I got up to perfectly clear, dark skies. It would prove to be cold and windy even with the warming rays of the sun present all day.  Winter coats and hats were required and gloves didn't hurt at certain times either.  There is still plenty of snowpack on the trails and everything is constantly wet from the melting snow. We had a great time watching the wildlife and scenery roll by as we swiftly headed down river.  Flows at the gauge in Saratoga were around 4900 cfs which kept us moving along.  We did 19 river miles and managed some decent brown trout on buggers and streamers throughout the day. I tried the typical nymph combos for the lake as well as various buggers and had a single hard strike on the bugger to go home with tonight.  A quick stop to cast for browns on the moving water was fruitless too. I hit the water around 9:00am and was rewarded with a terrific midge bite that continued into the early afternoon.  I managed a few rainbows in the 22 inch range and one fish that hit the 23 inch mark. It had created a nice foam line running directly down the dam of the lake.  Fish were stacked on the foam and I was able to catch a few in close by just working my nymph rig in the roil of the foam.  The trout wanted the midge and all were on the bottom fly. Upon leaving town for the lake, I didn't think things were that bad but after arriving out on the open plains it was a much different weather situation. I was happily engaged in hooking, fighting and landing rainbows at a predictable and fast pace.  With the food source they were targeting swarming all over the dam it was obvious upon arrival that action would be good if I could just get a midge in front of them.  It was nice to have a good workout on the casting arm. The lake was very muddy with a visible mud line far out of casting distance.
